Spirit of 2012

Spirit of 2012

  • We pledge to invest in projects that empower young people and provide them with leadership opportunities.
  • We pledge to do more to empower girls and young women
  • We pledge to invest in projects the create happier, healthier individuals and communities with young people at their heart
  • We pledge to keep our Youth Advisory Panel (YAP) at the heart of Spirit of 2012
  • We pledge our support to developing a deeper understanding of the outcomes of youth social action for young people and their communities.

We have met our original pledge to invest £8m to projects that empower young people. In the first five months of 2018 we have awarded grants of £3.7m to youth social action projects, including £1.8m to UK Youth and the British Red Cross to empower girls to change their communities, inspired by the centenary of the first women achieving the vote, in partnership with the #iwill Fund. Spirit is also supporting the Year of Young People in Scotland and has contributed £50,000 to the Year of Young People Fund.

  • We have unveiled plans for our ‘Spirited’ exhibition in the autumn which will focus on the young social activists that fought for the vote, in order to inspire today’s young people to take their first steps into social action.
  • We have awarded £1.8m to the Youth Sport Trust and Sporting Equals to work with young people in five communities in England to use cricket as a tool to bring their communities together and increase social cohesion and understanding.
  • Our second cohort of young people in our YAP has been in place for over a year and has designed and awarded their own grant fund focussing on how the arts can impact mental health. We will recruit our third cohort later this year.
  • In October 2017 we published the findings of our first summative evaluation, highlighting the impact of our funded projects on young people. To support our focus on learning we also awarded a grant of £50,000 to Step up to Service to support its impact and outcomes workstream.

Quote from Spirit of 2012
“Opportunities for young people to get involved in initiatives that matter to them and their communities are really important; Spirit is committed to enabling young people from all walks of life to contribute and take action for the benefit of others through the projects we support”
