Creating a double benefit through youth social action

We currently fail to make the most of the energy, talent and commitment of millions of young people in the UK aged 10-20, who have an appetite to contribute more to their communities.

Educators acknowledge the potential for youth social action to improve the academic outcomes while employers believe it can build the skills necessary to be successful in the workplace. Therefore it is vital to galvanise cross-sector, cross-party support to dramatically increase opportunities for young people to participate.

For the next couple of years, the campaign wants to ensure we are as effective as possible and to make sure the #iwill campaign legacy continues, even when Step Up To Serve closes down at the end of 2020. Our goals for 2018-2019 are to:

  • Support more schools serving low-income communities to embed youth social action into their culture and practice
  • Enable more young people to tackle health inequalities within their communities (e.g. through volunteering in hospitals or as health champions)
  • Embed youth social action into local and national plans to address key environmental challenges (e.g. air pollution, plastic consumption, etc.)
  • Amplify the voices of young people through the campaign’s communications
  • Encourage and shape investment – both within and outside of the #iwill Fund – that makes meaningful social action the norm for young people

The #iwill campaign’s collective impact strategy is informed by a UK-wide survey which has been collecting input from 2,000 young people aged 10-20 each year since 2014.  The results of the National Youth Social Action survey, carried out by Ipsos MORI, in partnership with Step Up To Serve and DCMS, since 2014 can be seen below:

We know young people are already doing fantastic things in their communities, but there are many more who have still not played their part.  We want to ensure ALL young people to get access to social action opportunities – creating a habit for life, developing vital skills and making a positive impact on their communities.
