Matt Hyde

Matt Hyde is Chief Executive of the Scouts, the UK’s largest coeducation youth movement. Both as a volunteer and professionally he has worked to improve the life chances of young people, helping them develop the skills to succeed. Formerly Chief Executive of the National Union of Students (NUS), he has undertaken a number of leadership roles in the charity sector and as Chief Executive of the Scouts has contributed to a period of record membership growth since he joined in 2013. He has overseen the development and delivery of two major strategic plans, a major rebrand and award-winning campaigns including, A Million Hands, (working with five charities to provide social action opportunities for a quarter of a million young people) and he has spearheaded work to support the growth of Scouting in areas of deprivation.

His volunteer work is equally important. As a trustee of Step Up To Serve, he has helped change the conversation about youth volunteering, attracting support and investment to grow youth social action. As a local volunteer himself in a Scout Troop, he leads by example while understanding the issues facing grass roots volunteers. Matt is also a Patron of UNLOCK (the National Association of Reformed Offenders), a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts and was previously Vice-Chair of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO). Matt was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from Queen Mary University of London in 2012.

Before joining NUS, Matt was General Manager of Goldsmiths College Students’ Union, Deputy General Manager of King’s College London Students’ Union, President of the University of London Union and President of Queen Mary and Westfield College Students’ Union. He has a first class degree in English from Queen Mary University of London and an MBA with distinction from Westminster Business School.
